What can cause high testosterone levels in women other than pcos? I have elevated levels of testosterone but my doctor had a lot of tests done and said that I do not have PCOS, (an ultrasound showed that I did not have any cysts) my question is what else could cause this and is it going to make it harder for me to get pregnant in the future?

becca sue replied: "It depends on how old you are. It could be an onset of premenopause."

lala replied: "i was just recently diagnosed, but i do not have cysts either. if your doctor is basing his/her diagnosis on that alone, i would definately get a second opinion just to rule pcos out for sure. i ahve elevated testosterone and very low estrogen due to my pcos and have been prescribed provera and bc and it seems to be helping. good luck!"

What are some symptoms of high testosterone levels in women? are skin breakouts and very fast weight gain common symptoms of this?

Sparticus replied: "Basically, the same as men. More hair, grow testis (just kidding), enhanced libido, increased energy, increased production of red blood cells and protection against osteoporosis, oily skin, bad body odor, faster body growth, and a host of other things."

Andy replied: "Signs & Symptoms -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Abnormally high testosterone levels in women can lead to a variety of symptoms. Most often, women with high testosterone levels develop male pattern hair growth (hirsutism), especially on their faces and chests. More rarely and over time, some women may experience virilization, which is increased muscle mass, redistribution of body fat, enlargement of the clitoris, deepening of the voice, male pattern baldness, acne, and/or increased perspiration. It is important to note that some women develop hirsutism without having a high testosterone level. I am not sure if weight gain comes with high testosterone. But it is common with hypothyroidism Here are the signs of that: Increased sensitivity to cold Constipation Pale, dry skin A puffy face Hoarse voice An elevated blood cholesterol level Unexplained weight gain Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness Pain, stiffness or swelling in your joints Muscle weakness Heavier than normal menstrual periods Depression"

What are side effects of high testosterone in women? I am TTC and saw my normal endocrinologist today (not an RE) because I had big issues with my insulin & blood sugar. Well that is pretty much under control but the last bloodwork I had said my testosterone levels are like double what they should be. She says my metformin should bring that down but I don't think it is.... what are some side effects of such a high level in a woman? I am almost 31 & have had 1 child .... I don't have a high sex drive, I actually don't have much a sex drive. I don't know what is wrong with me! I questioned my doctor about doing my next round of clomid but she says to continue because the clomid could help bring it down, I just have my doubts about that.

yzarc_jr replied: "lots of hair"

Funny Girl replied: "Now, I am not for sure on this, so check with your gyn, but at one time, I had a period for 35 days straight and my gyn told me that it was because my body didn't manufacture enough testosterone to stop the bleeding that month. If it were to continue, I should come back to see him. It did finally stop. My thoughts are, then, that if you have too much testosterone in your system, it may stop your period"

gyoza1216 replied: "My sister had a high level of testosterone. She was really aggressive and a little big for her size. Testosterone is what gives women a sex drive. Taking birth control pills lowers the testosterone which can sometimes kill the sex drive. Also, you sometimes get extra hair on your body. All women have hair in odd places but that's normal. You won't grow a beard. And most importantly, you may not be able to have a child without hormone therapy. You have to have a certain level of estrogen in order to support a fetus and if you're testosterone levels are too high, you won't be able to conceive. When my sister hit 20 her hormones balanced out on their own and she's got two kids now."

angelzwings20032001 replied: "I was diagnosed with the same. Aggressive and irritable at times. Sex drive is insatiable."

Fraulein replied: "You've received lots of good answers. What symptoms are you exhibiting? Do you feel any different?"

Can women sense high testosterone levels in guys? There was an article in Men's Health in October 2006 about women can sense high testosterone levels just by looking at a man's face and they could also tell from their face if the man wanted children or not. Is this true at all?

emjackson95 replied: "Uh, no. At least I can't."

~brunette*of*your*dreams~ replied: "yeah, it's not that hard."

redpeach_mi replied: "no"

mechanical_blueprint replied: "If that was true then all those baldies would have dates."

Latoya L replied: "the sixth sense."

kerry9477 replied: "I wouldn't know."

Scarlet replied: "No I never heard of that article, but I have heard men that have a receding hair line or going bald ... tend to have a very high testosterone level."

Typhoon replied: "if the wood is hard, they can tell."

How to reduce high androgen (testosterone) levels in women? And if that is not possible, how to reduce the effects of the excess of the hormone like being overweight, hairiness, acne or deep voice?

Julie replied: "i was reading a article for how to have better sex.and i think they said that tomatoes lower testosterone.im not sure if it was tomatoes though."

Anonymous replied: "If you know yoga, then you have to do pranayam to achieve this :-)."

Do you think its true that more sexual women have higher testosterone levels? I really don't buy this but my bf said that he heard this. He told me I have higher amounts of testosterone in my system because I like sex so much...not cool. lol I also heard some guy say that women who come easier have higher levels as well? Do you think this is true?

sarah replied: "its not true"

NJ replied: "I think that there is logic to it,probably true."

Bolt replied: "It can be true. In treating lack of sexual desire in women, prescribing testosterone can help. But, just because a woman likes sex, does not mean much as far as how much testosterone she already has. Both desire and orgasm in women are dependant on more than just hormones, though."

can high levels of testosterone in women cause her to feel a bit lesbian and to have irregular periods ? or no periods at all??

Becka N replied: "High levels of testosterone in women does cause irregular periods or none at all. I have PCOS which means I have a higher level of testosterone and I just get random periods every few months or so. Im not sure about the lesbian part though, but I dont think that having extra testosterone would make you feel sexually attracted to women if you werent already. Hope this helped! = )"

Do "tomboyish" women that engage in traditionally masculine activities have higher levels of testosterone? Do "tomboyish" women that engage in traditionally masculine activities have higher levels of testosterone than the average woman? I base this question on the fact that I heard a comment from a woman while watching a women's poker match on television a few weeks ago. In this match, one of the female poker players was being interviewed, and I recall her mentioning that she and the other female players at the table had "higher levels of testosterone" than the average woman -- implying that her notion is based on the fact that they love playing competitive poker; what is usually seen as being a "man's sport". How much truth do you think there is to her statement? Do any tomboy women here on this forum feel they have higher testosterone levels than the prissy, strawberry shortcake teaparty curtsy women?

Krelboyne_Girl replied: "I have high levels of testosterone (in my blood). Here's the thing - I like dresses, jewelry, make-up, etc. But, I was the tree-climbing sort of kid, got into fights a lot at school, get on better with boys, and chick flicks make me *cringe*. I really, really disliked my body changing in puberty. I love cars more than most girls. I'm also good at reading maps, and I suck at multitasking. But do remember these are all rather clich. As for sports - I dislike sports in general, cause I'm a lazy ass. But I am a competitive lil bastard. Basically, I look rather femme but I don't act like it, which really throws men off balance, by the way."

xg6 replied: "Our society has labeled certain activities as masculine and other activities as feminine, but they are arbitrary. Why is poker considered male? Couldn't it also be considered a female activity, in that it is a bunch of people socializing. Is cooking considered a female job but men do it also (and are paid better than woman when cook for a living). The level of chemicals circulating in a person's blood has nothing to do with what a person does to occupy their time."

Fireball226 replied: "its not about that....my best friend has 4 brothers and she touched frogs as a kid...i didnt...i have more hormones than she does.. im very feminine.."

Happy Bullet replied: "According to Louanne Brizendine's book The Female Brain tomboys are explicitly caused by higher levels of testosterone affecting the brain."

Disgustin' Justin replied: "No, they have other admirable qualities instead. Strength, courage and guts are traditionally seen as masculine virtues but we really need more women to start showing them as well. There's nothing worse that being tied to some flibbertigibbet who expects you to do everything for her, believe me. Better to have a proper girl who is pleasantly surprised when you do things for her on your own initiative."

MafiaGirl replied: "I am a tomboy but have become more of a lady now.... I dont know but maybe...... I am very strong and very brave though I am the perfect indian girl..... :) Look at me boasting! lol"

da_fett the conqueror replied: "The answer may be yes. One study "found that the more testosterone a girl was exposed to in the womb, the more likely she was at a young age to engage in tomboy-like behavior, such as playing with toys that boys typically prefer". It could also be that "a mother's testosterone levels can determine whether they are more likely to have a tomboy". Perhaps the mothers pass on the genes for greater than usual amounts of testosterone to their female offspring. So the answer to your question seems to be yes."

Kelly M replied: "LOL don't you know that gender is a social construct? We're all identical, except for our plumbing. That is, until it's time to fix the car, or dig a ditch, or provide protection against a gun-wielding maniac. You're funny. Hormones mean nothing!"

Is it true that liberal women have higher testosterone levels than their boyfriends or husbands? I'm guessing that is probably the case. What say you, Yahoo gang?

leahfu replied: "Geez why you have to be so petty? Lets take the high ground and let THEM be the petty ones. Like the whole textbooks in redneck. Stereotyping shows ignorance"

Obama USA replied: "Ann Coulter is the one with the adam's apple. She is a republican."

Sarah Palin's Moose replied: "When you get old enough to have a car and go on dates you can make this determination for yourself. But I have found that most republican women smell a little like carpet cleaner. And their makeup rubs off on the pillow and makes their head slide around."

Druid Hills replied: "xD.... I'd agree, that's funny. All liberal women are ugly and are growing mustashes, Look at Rosie O'Donald... I can't name one hot liberal women. Pretty republican women: Eleibeth Hasslebeck, Sarah Palien...ect. Liberal Women are all man ladies! lol."

eugene jeep replied: "They do seem like a much more manly group of women !"

CathRun replied: "Old joke. You asked this question before. I'll answer it the same way. I bet I have higher testosterone than you."

Catherine J replied: "lmaoooo i actually laughed out loud. I never really thought about it, but yea I agree with the Rosie O'Donald comment. They probably do :)"

griggle replied: "they don't have boyfriends or husbands, just lesbian "partners""
